Fuel economy has improved on F-150s equipped with the base engine, the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6, and the 5.0-liter V-8.

The improvements come in part thanks to standard auto stop/start technology and a new 10-speed automatic that comes with most models. At its most efficient, the gas-powered F-150 achieves an impressive 20/26/22 mpg city/highway/combined.

If you recall, a naturally aspirated 3.3-liter V-6 replaced the base 3.5-liter engine for the 2017 model year. The new engine produces 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 8 hp and 12 lb-ft. Models powering just the rear wheels receive a boost of 2 mpg in combined fuel economy, hitting 19/25/22 mpg. Four-wheel-drive models are rated 18/23/20 mpg, up 1 mpg combined from the 2017 model.

The second-generation 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine produces 325 hp and 400 lb-ft, the same horsepower as before but up 25 lb-ft from last year. According to EPA estimates, this engine should achieve 20/26/22 mpg, up 1 mpg in the city from last year. Four-wheel-drive versions net 19/24/21 mpg, an increase of 1 mpg combined.

The 5.0-liter V-8 engine receives 395 hp and 400 lb-ft, up 10 hp and 13 lb-ft. For the first time, this engine comes paired to a 10-speed automatic. Fuel economy on the V-8 tops out at 17/23/19 mpg city/highway/combined, or 16/22/18 mpg with four-wheel drive. Both configurations represent a 1 mpg increase in combined fuel economy from the 2017 model.

Fuel economy for the remaining two engines on the F-150 remain unchanged from last year. A 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 still tops out at 18/25/21 mpg, or 17/23/19 mpg with four-wheel drive. The Raptor receives a higher-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 and gets just 15/18/16 mpg.

Ford also announced that the regular 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 can tow 13,200 pounds. Previously, towing maxed out at 12,200 pounds.

We’re still waiting on final specs for the all-new 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6. That model will be available next spring, while other F-150s go on sale this fall.

So what are two Nissan race cars doing in a Honda museum? This year, Twin Ring Motegi is celebrating its 20th anniversary, which […]

But what do you do when you’re Infiniti and you don’t have a rich motorsports heritage to capitalize on? You imagine that you do and design a vintage F1-inspired “what if” concept for Pebble Beach.

Infiniti has teased the concept it’s bringing to the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and from the streamlined, bare-metal fuselage, vintage open-face helmet, and old-timey goggles seen in the photo, Infiniti is clearly channeling the golden age of grand prix racing.

Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti’s senior vice president of global design, explains the idea behind the concept in a release:

“It started as a simple thought – what if we found a car, down at the Southern tip of Japan, buried deep in a barn, hidden from all eyes for 70 years? What if in this car we found the seed of passion planted during our first Japanese Grand Prix and the power and artistry of Infiniti today? What would this discovery look like?”

It sounds like a fun exercise for designers, and if the concept is well done, it could fuel the imaginations of racing history buffs everywhere. What if there was a Japanese grand prix racer that predates Honda’s 1964 RA271? If Infiniti is imagining a car from 70 years ago, that would place it in 1947, meaning the hypothetical racer would have rubbed fenders with Maseratis, Talbots, and Alfa Romeos.

Though Infiniti looked back at post-war grand prix racers for inspiration, the concept will showcase the brand’s current “Powerful Elegance” design language. Can the two disparate styles mesh? We’ll find out when the car debuts in Monterey, California, later this month.

Carfection finds out

Since its debut, it seems as if the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio has been endlessly compared to the BMW M3. It only makes sense, though, as the two brands have had a long history of competing and any powerful rear-drive sedan will naturally be compared to the M3. The real question is whether or not the Giulia can actually take the M3 on. Carfection tests the Alfa out for the first time to find out.

To be honest, the Giulia Quadrifoglio came at a good time, as the M3 has never been weaker. The current-gen F80 M3 is probably the least-loved M3 ever, by many enthusiasts. It’s still a great car, though, and one that’s tough to beat. So can the Giulia Quadrifoglio compete with this current M3?

Well, Alex Goy finds out in this video and he’s actually quite skeptical of Alfas. Almost every Alfa to hit the market since he’s been alive has kind of been crap. I get it, we’re around the same age and there hasn’t been a modern Alfa that really inspired much love. When the 4C finally came out, Goy wasn’t a fan. He didn’t like the harsh ride, unassisted steering and loud cabin. In fact, he hated it. So when the Giulia Quadrifoglio came out, he wasn’t expecting much, despite the praise he’d heard from friends and colleagues.

Despite that hesitance, though, Goy seems to really like the Alfa. On a wet track, the Giulia Quadrifolgio is an absolute riot. Its chassis is just so communicative and its steering is just so lovely. In fact, driving one myself a the highlight of my 2017, so I completely understand Goy’s enjoyment of the Giulia. While he isn’t a fan of pretty much every other Alfa, the Giulia seems to have Goy smitten.

Can the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio beat the BMW M3? Maybe. Depends on who you ask, to be honest. But there’s one thing that’s certain — Alfa is back and its new Giulia is damn good.

Singer Vehicle Design is well known for providing lavish attention to the Porsche 911s it restores, but this, man, is something else. The California company announced today that it’s collaborating with Williams Advanced Engineering—yes, that Williams—on a modified air-cooled, naturally aspirated 4.0-liter Porsche flat-six that makes 500 horsepower.

-

For those keeping score at home, this engine matches the power output of the current 911 GT3, despite the fact that it relies on a belt-driven fan for cooling.

Singer and Williams tapped Hans Mezger, the man who designed Porsche’s first flat-six and many of its greatest race engines, as a technical consultant for this project. This engine is actually a modified version of a Mezger design, the 3.6-liter flat-six from a 1990 911, but its spec reads more like something designed for F1 competition.

It uses four-valve cylinder heads, dual oil circuits, titanium connecting rods, aluminum throttle bodies, carbon-fiber intake trumpets, and a carbon-fiber airbox. There are also ram-air intakes built into the 911’s rear quarter-windows and a titanium and Inconel exhaust. Singer says it’s good to rev beyond 9000 rpm.

It must sound quite nice.

The engine pictured here is just a rendering, but it will make its first real-world appearance in a 911 restored for Singer client Scott Blattner. We should have additional details about this Singer-restored 1990 911 in September.

-

Singer said that Williams worked on other elements of Blattner’s 911 that will be announced shortly. Eventually, Singer will offer these Williams-enhanced components as part of a stand-alone collection of lightweight and high-performance mods.

Considering most Singer clients pay more than $600,000 for the company to restore their old 911s, it wouldn’t be surprising to see cars with this engine crest the $1 million mark. Given what we can see here, it might just be worth it.

After flying past auction estimates to hit $337,000 last year, the late rapper's Hummer H1 is still on the market. That winning $337,000 bid turned out to be a bit of a dud. The bidder was reportedly qualified to make that bid, but the...

The famous Project Cullinan Rolls-Royce has been working on for the last couple of years will be finished within a year, as a new report suggests. The first deliveries of the ultra-luxurious SUV will take place in the early months of 2019 as the CEO of the company, Mr. Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes recently confirmed for Automotive News Europe. Unlike other cars in the super-luxury SUV segment though, the upcoming crossover won’t be sharing its chassis with a lesser car, instead being built atop the same frame as the recently launched Phantom VIII.

This is nothing new, to be frank, as the Goodwood-based manufacturer has been pretty adamant about it ever since the first pics of camouflaged prototypes started surfacing online, claiming that unlike older models in Rolls-Royce’s range, this time, there will be no more sharing with BMW’s 7 Series. The reason behind such a move is apparently the goal of offering customers a truly bespoke car with the most comfortable ride possible in an automobile. This is what will set the Rolls-Royce SUV apart according to its CEO.

“We are not using mass-manufactured body shells,” he said for Automotive News Europe. “That limits what you can do on the design side, and it undermines exclusivity massively. You don’t want a camouflaged [Audi] Q7 in that segment. You want to have a true Rolls-Royce.” To me, that sounds like shots fired in the direction of the Bentley Bentayga, a car known for sharing a lot of its components with the Audi Q7. At the same time, the Q7 shares a lot of its underpinnings with other cars from the Volkswagen group, including the Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne.

The car Rolls-Royce is working on won’t be a traditional SUV as it has been highlighted on a number of occasions. Every time an official talks about the Cullinan project, they describe it as a ‘high-riding all-terrain vehicle’ and not a mundane and terribly regular SUV. On the technical side of things, expect the same four-seat layout inside while the engine under the hood will probably be the same as the one used on the Phantom. Other than that, the interior will most likely also feature the famous Gallery of the Phantom while the most expensive materials will be used to cocoon the occupants in absolute luxury.

They’re usually not cheap, but it’s a great way to stand out from the waves of Rosso Ferrari 250s. Avoiding the mainstream, we picked our favorite drop-tops from RM Sotheby’s upcoming Monterey sale.

1939 Frazer Nash-BMW 328 Sports

Sure, BMW isn’t exactly flying under the radar, but pre-war Bimmers are few and far between. Plus, this 328 roadster is particularly special, thanks to a bespoke coachbuilt body

This is one of just six BMWs brought to England through Frazer Nash. Like many high-end cars of the day, the cars were delivered as rolling chassis, letting customers decide which atelier to sculpt the bodywork. Thanks to the onset of World War II, the Frazer Nash BMWs were impounded and held by the government until the war concluded. This curvaceous roadster was bought in 1949 by RAF pilot and factory Frazer Nash driver Dickie Stoops, who had the car bodied by Leacroft of Egham after taking delivery.

The result was a spectacular open-top barchetta that was entered in the 1949 Spa 24-Hour race, where it took 6th in class and 12th overall. Stoops traded the BMW back to Frazer Nash for a Mille Miglia roadster, and the car disappeared from the public market until 1988. Since then, it’s enjoyed time at some of the most prestigious museums and shows around the world.

1971 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI All-Weather Cabriolet by Frua

It’s not as handsome as the new eighth-generation Phantom, but this oddball Phantom VI was too good to pass up. According to RM Sotheby’s, this Rolls took a reported 22 years to complete. The car was commissioned new by a British real estate developer, who worked with Pietro Frua to develop a unique slab-sided design that followed an earlier Frua-bodied Phantom from a few years prior.

Development was slow. After four years, the car was still in various stages of work. Rolls-Royce collector James Leake purchased the incomplete car in 1977, armed with new sketches from Frua. Work continued, but Frua retired and then passed away in 1983, leaving the car without the creator to oversee production. Over the course of nearly a decade, the owner worked patiently to finish the car, eventually reaching completion in 1993, where it was shown at that year’s Geneva auto show.

Aside from the unique design, the “All-Weather” drop-top is a complex design that allows for three individual configurations. Depending on weather or mood of the imperious passengers, the Phantom transforms into either a sedanca de ville, landaulet, or full convertible. Regardless of roof config, the back is chock-full of the finest luxury available during that time, including burled walnut trim with silver inlays, silk-lined lady’s vanity, cigar humidor, television, VCR, and cocktail cabinet.

On top of this, you won’t have to worry about dealing with previous owner’s old cigar ash or lipstick stains – this behemoth wears just 72 miles on the odometer.

1952 Siata-Ford 208S Cabriolet Speciale

While Siata made a name for itself tuning-up Fiat powertrains and sports cars, it looks like the Italian automaker played the role of consultant and supplier for other mediums as well. This shapely cabrio was initially commissioned by an Ohio-based Ford dealer as a promotional car to drum up interest. When Ford turned down the request for a Police-spec chassis, a regular 1951 Ford Sedan was purchased instead.

The car was sent to Siata through a New York Ford dealership in mid-1952. At some point either before or after being shipped to Italy, the Ford was stripped down to its skivvies, retaining only the Flathead V-8 powertrain, suspension, and instruments. Siata developed a special chassis for this project, and sent the car to Stabilimenti Farina, a coachbuilder that is seen as a pseudo-predecessor to Pininfarina. Stabilimenti folded soon after the car was completed, leading some involved with the project to believe Bertone may have had a hand in finishing the car.

After returning to Ohio, the beautiful Siata changed hands multiple times over the years, before settling in with a long-term owner in 1988, where it remained until 2005, when it moved to a new owner before finally landing with its current steward.

1925 Bugatti Type 35C Grand Prix

A bright blue Type 35C is hardly the most offbeat car to hit the auction block, but when compared with these other drop-tops, the Bugatti stands out like a rainbow-colored unicorn.

According to records, this 35C was originally built for use at the ACF Grand Prix in 1925, where it finished 8th in the race after almost 10 hours of continuous driving. After a brief stint with a new owner in 1926, the Bugatti was sold to Edward Meyer. He used the blue Bug to win the Moroccan Grand Prix in 1928, a race that spanned 440 miles between Casablanca and Marrakesh.

After Meyer’s ownership ended around 1929, the car passed through an impressive number of collectors and Bugatti enthusiasts before landing in California in the mid-1950s, where it remains today.

It’s far from the cleanest example – the car was run hard, and put up wet in many cases – but Bugatti historians assert that it’s extremely authentic and very original in some aspects.

Why? Because the car was held in such high regard and its return has been eagerly awaited by so many. While we have high hopes for the 2019 Supra, it looks like it will forego one thing we love: a manual transmission. That's the latest piece of news, which...

WHAT WE LIKE: A car that can fit in compact parking spaces and swallow tons of gear? Count us in. Since joining our fleet this spring, our blue 2017 Subaru Impreza has carried luggage for four, equipment for a 20-person painting party, and supplies for a weeklong beach vacation (all separate occasions, mind you). We’ve had fun on the way to these events, too, as our early appreciation for the Impreza’s on-road agility and compliant ride has not faded. In an unexpected twist, the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) has garnered its own share of praise, thanks to the stepped upshifts it employs in a convincing mimicry of a conventional six-speed automatic. Subaru’s EyeSight system is another high point. The optional adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist handle lane changes and city traffic better than many comparable systems we’ve tried. Crucially, the systems allow the Impreza to follow other cars closely enough that opportunistic drivers can’t squeeze into the gaps in front of us, and both acceleration and braking are smooth, natural, and appropriately timed. READ MORE ››

Toyota Supra Sports Full-LED Headlights
We’ve seen Toyota Supra mules running around for a while, and not much has changed on them — until now. Our spy photographers caught the Supra testing in Germany with the usual camouflage and nothing new until you see the headlights, which look full LED, vastly different from past test mules that were equipped with more traditional-looking headlights.

The headlights appear to have six individual LED projectors per housing, with two rows of three lenses in each. No surprise as many automakers have gone the LED route for their appealing looks and efficiency. Oddly enough, there is some resemblance to Acura’s Jewel Eye LED headlights but little resemblance to any existing Toyota/Lexus or BMW LED headlights.

Could these be the actual production headlights or at least an available option? It’s possible, but hard to say since they’re equipped on a camouflaged pre-production mule. Once the cover comes off, we will likely have our answer. In the meantime, let’s hope the Toyota Supra comes standard with a dazzling set of bright, full-LED headlights.

The Supra coupe shares the same platform as the upcoming BMW Z5 convertible thanks to the joint development deal signed by Toyota and BMW. We expect power to come four- and six-cylinder turbocharged engines from BMW or a rumored twin-turbo V-6 from Toyota. A hybrid powertrain might be introduced later in production. Magna Steyr is expected to manufacture both vehicles in Graz, Austria.

Auto Show
After numerous engineering setbacks, BMW is finally set to debut a convertible version of its plug-in hybrid i8 sports car at the L.A. auto show, according to a report Automotive News.

BMW first hinted at the roadster in a presentation to investors. The slide show featured one vehicle labeled as the i8 Roadster and its timetable explained the car would be released in 2018. In 2012 BMW hinted at a convertible i8 when it showed the i8 Concept Roadster with eDrive.

We’ve spotted prototypes of the i8 Roadster in the past, so we know a few things about the new variant. Expect to see some minor aesthetic changes in the grille, side skirts, and rear for a more up-to-date look. It is also important to note the roof of the roadster, as it will not be a true convertible but more of a targa top design. At this point it is unclear if the doors of the new model will open upward like the coupe.

The powertrain will continue to use a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-three at the rear axle and an electric motor at the front axle. What we are really looking forward to seeing is 10-kW-hr http://ift.tt/2mjumAN

The i8 Roadster is still a hybrid car for now. However, there are rumors of a fully electric version to come out in 2022.

The L.A. auto show takes place December 1-10 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The i8 Roadster goes on sale next spring.

The more cynical among us might think of Infiniti’s “heritage” as rocks and trees, recalling the inscrutable advertising that accompanied the launch of the brand’s first automobile in 1989. But Nissan’s senior vice president of global design, the thoughtful and engaging Alfonso Albaisa, moots the question, “What if we found a car, down at the southern tip of Japan, buried deep in a barn, hidden from all eyes for 70 years?”

-

We’ll find out next week at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance during the annual pilgrimage to Monterey. The lone photo of the Infiniti concept shows a section of what appears to be a silver racing car (odd, since Japan’s national racing color is white), perhaps a monoposto GP design or perhaps some sort of early sports-racer.

Infiniti hints that the car may feature some measure of electrification, pairing it with the hand-built craftsmanship that exemplified early postwar sports and luxury machines. While info is deliberately thin on the ground, we’re excited to see more, and we’ll most certainly have more next week.

While it's one of many options for those seeking practicality with a splash of fun, it truly was the nameplate that birthed an entire segment, which many of us like to call the "hot hatch." Volkswagen wasn't too hip on building the Volkswagen Golf GTI, though. Back in the day, it was...

The first vehicles arrive later this year, and the fleet will eventually scale to more than 100 cars. These will be sourced from a variety of automotive brands. The U.S., Israel, and Europe will serve as testing grounds for these highly automated vehicles.

“Geographic diversity is very important as different regions have very diverse driving styles as well as different road conditions and signage,” Mobileye boss Amnon Shashua said in a release. “Our goal is to develop autonomous vehicle technology that can be deployed anywhere, which means we need to test and train the vehicles in varying locations.”

The autonomous cars will leverage technology from both Mobileye and Intel. Mobileye brings to the table its collision detection software, while Intel offers its expertise in chip technology.

“Neither company could do this alone,” Shashua said. “Given resident skill-sets within the two companies, a standalone fleet of test vehicles is possible almost immediately.”

Shashua says Intel’s fleet will accelerate the rollout of driverless cars while reducing costs for the auto industry. By learning from the data that is collected over the course of the test run, Intel can help automakers save lots of money on development.

The vehicles will be capable of Level 4 autonomy as defined by SAE. Achieving “high automation,” Level 4 cars can make important decisions such as accelerating, braking, and changing lanes by themselves.

Last year, BMW announced it was partnering with Intel and Mobileye to create a platform the industry can use to develop self-driving cars. Delphi has since joined the collaboration. BMW wants to bring a self-driving car to mass production by 2021, just like many other automakers that are targeting next decade for introducing autonomous vehicles.

Those looking for a stylish alternative to less flavorful three-row crossovers may take solace in the Santa Fe. Its elegant styling is handsome, certainly, but it comes with compromises to both cargo-hauling abilities and third-row passenger space. A refined V-6 engine provides towing muscle, but acceleration and fuel economy lag behind most rivals. Rich with features starting from the base SE trim level and becoming increasingly luxurious up the model range—as the Ultimate nomenclature suggests—the Santa Fe states its case on value. An unbeatable warranty, good looks, and interior comfort are strong points that, for some, may make up for its shortcomings. READ MORE ››

But since there will be nothing sporty nor utility-focused about the Cullinan, you better not call it an SUV. And according to one executive, you shouldn’t compare it to the Bentley Bentayga, either.

Speaking to Automotive News, Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes, Rolls-Royces’ CEO, said the British automaker won’t assemble the Cullinan with “mass-manufactured body shells.” According to Mueller-Oetvoes, “that limits what you can do on the design side, and it undermines exclusivity massively.”

He then took aim at Volkswagen-owned Bentley, saying, “you don’t want a camouflaged [Audi] Q7 in that segment. You want to have a true Rolls-Royce.”

Well, OK then.

We reached out to Bentley to see what it had to say about its quarter-million-dollar Bentayga being called a camouflaged Q7, but its spokesperson declined to comment.

Early rumors suggested that the Cullinan would be based on a heavily modified BMW 7 Series platform, but it will instead be built on the new “Architecture of Luxury” platform that Rolls-Royce developed for the new Phantom. Expect it to offer similar over-the-top luxury and a base price that begins well into six-figure territory. With production expected to begin toward the end of 2018, look for the Cullinan to debut later this year.
