The 530e xDrive iPerformance plug-in hybrid lacks the satisfying driving dynamics and sporty character that once separated BMW’s 5-series sedan from the rest of the mid-size luxury pack. But then so, too, do the conventionally powered 5-series iterations, which are softer, tech-laden facsimiles of the fine sports sedans BMW once made. In this new world where BMWs emphasize comfort over driving enjoyment, the 530e at least offers an added element: a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
