Magical Thinking: Infiniti Teases Retro Barn-Find Concept

2017 Infiniti Pebble Beach Concept

-

The more cynical among us might think of Infiniti’s “heritage” as rocks and trees, recalling the inscrutable advertising that accompanied the launch of the brand’s first automobile in 1989. But Nissan’s senior vice president of global design, the thoughtful and engaging Alfonso Albaisa, moots the question, “What if we found a car, down at the southern tip of Japan, buried deep in a barn, hidden from all eyes for 70 years?”

We’ll find out next week at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance during the annual pilgrimage to Monterey. The lone photo of the Infiniti concept shows a section of what appears to be a silver racing car (odd, since Japan’s national racing color is white), perhaps a monoposto GP design or perhaps some sort of early sports-racer.

Infiniti hints that the car may feature some measure of electrification, pairing it with the hand-built craftsmanship that exemplified early postwar sports and luxury machines. While info is deliberately thin on the ground, we’re excited to see more, and we’ll most certainly have more next week.
