BMW i8 Roadster May Debut at L.A. Auto Show

After numerous engineering setbacks, BMW is finally set to debut a convertible version of its plug-in hybrid i8 sports car at the L.A. auto show, according to a report Automotive News.

BMW first hinted at the roadster in a presentation to investors. The slide show featured one vehicle labeled as the i8 Roadster and its timetable explained the car would be released in 2018. In 2012 BMW hinted at a convertible i8 when it showed the i8 Concept Roadster with eDrive.

We’ve spotted prototypes of the i8 Roadster in the past, so we know a few things about the new variant. Expect to see some minor aesthetic changes in the grille, side skirts, and rear for a more up-to-date look. It is also important to note the roof of the roadster, as it will not be a true convertible but more of a targa top design. At this point it is unclear if the doors of the new model will open upward like the coupe.

The powertrain will continue to use a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-three at the rear axle and an electric motor at the front axle. What we are really looking forward to seeing is 10-kW-hr http://ift.tt/2mjumAN

The i8 Roadster is still a hybrid car for now. However, there are rumors of a fully electric version to come out in 2022.

The L.A. auto show takes place December 1-10 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The i8 Roadster goes on sale next spring.
